The Scoop on Hair Accessories

Smart & Chic’s expert accessory designer, Dee Dredge, gives us the trend report and advice on choosing the perfect hair accessory for your big day. She custom designs and creates signature pieces such as birdcage veils, tiaras, flower or feather clips, decorative combs, and more!

S&C: What are the most common hair accessories for the wedding day?

Dee: I get a ton of requests for bias cut silk flower hair fasteners with feathers. Rhinestones are a big deal as well.

S&C: What is an upcoming trend with hair accessories?

Dee: I am seeing a lot of muted colors coming into the wedding accessories. Yellow and burnt umber is very popular lately. I adore color so I am glad that it’s coming back! Just because a dress is white or ivory doesn't mean the hair accessory has to be!

S&C: What kind of materials do you use for your pieces?

Dee: The materials I like most are vintage millinery flowers, antique rhinestone jewelry, rhinestones, feathers, 28 gage wire, sterling silver, Swarovski crystals, silk ribbon and bullion trim.

S&C: Do you create/sell veils?

Dee: I just do birdcage veils. They are simple, beautiful and can be worn many different ways.

S&C: Any advice on how a bride should choose a hair accessory?

Dee: How I look at it is if you’re going to have a veil and a hair accessory, then go with something a bit smaller for your accessory.

Short hair always looks better with a headband rather than a bulky head piece - something that lies down close to the head like a feather pad with rhinestones.

Half-up hair needs a little bling in the back so I would say go with a vintage barrette or whimsical feathers that flow down with the hair.

A full undo tends to look great with a flashy fastener attached to the side of the head.

S&C: Any tips on how to incorporate heirloom jewelry??

Dee: A lot of women want to have their grandma’s old jewelry as part of their accessories but sometimes can’t figure out where to fit them in. It’s very easy for me to make a hair comb out of vintage brooches without destroying the original piece. That’s always fun to be able to wear it on a comb for the wedding then keep it as a pin for the later generations.

S&C: Do you make hair pieces for Flower Girls and Bridesmaids as well?

Dee: Yes and Yes.
My favorite pieces for bridesmaids and flower girls are small any-color silk flower petals with a few Swarovski crystals in the middle.
For Bridesmaids, I like making smaller, simpler copies of what the bride has for her hair.
Flower girls look good with some type of tiara or headband. They stay in place a lot better than clips.

S&C: How much advance notice would you like for creating a custom piece?

Dee: Around three weeks notice is always appreciated.

S&C: What is the price range for your pieces?

Dee: Anywhere between $5 to $400
